New Forest Children’s Therapy provides private occupational therapy to support children and young people in developing the skills they need for everyday tasks and activities across the New Forest and Hampshire.
Occupational Therapists focus on everything a child does throughout their day — from self-care and play to learning and social participation.
We use play, and children’s natural motivation to learn and explore, to help them develop skills and overcome challenges in a positive, supportive way.
Our aim is to help children and young people take part in the activities that matter most to them, whether at home, at school, or in the wider community.
Through purposeful play and meaningful activities, occupational therapists support children to reach their goals, build confidence, maximise their abilities, and develop independence.
How can we support your child?
- Self-care activities: Getting dressed, eating and sleeping.
- Productive occupations: Learning, writing, taking part in PE.
- Play and leisure: Playing with friends and doing sports or hobbies.
Our occupational therapy approach:
- Provide a comprehensive assessment of a child's physical and functional needs, looking at their strengths and areas of concern.
- Observe their play and functional skills in a clinic or school environment.
- Support children to create and meet their own goals.
- Devise activities or a programme of activities to improve the skills required to participate in the activity.
- Provide direct treatment using a variety of approaches to improve the child's ability to participate in meaningful occupations (activities).
- Recommend or advise on equipment, changes to the environment or strategies to help the child to participate.
- Break down complex activities into smaller, more manageable steps. Guide the child through each step before moving on to the next, which builds mastery and reduces frustration.
- Promote children's choice and motivation. Allow the child to make choices within the activity to increase their engagement and sense of ownership.
